Reader's Review: WHY I AM PROUD TO BE A PAGAN!

This fat little book has a deceptive title; I bought it on impulse, not knowing much about it (I like the author), and I thought it would tell me how to "honor the craft and culture of earth and goddess." Well, this book does not tell you HOW to honor, it tells you WHY you should! Basically, it explains the Pagan origins of our history & culture. There are six sections (Art & Liturature, Folklore & Folkways, Society & Culture, People, Science & Technology, Mythological Personages, and Sacred Sites), broken up into many chapters with examples of each of these six categories. For instance, under the section of Science & Technology, you will find chapters on Baking & Ovens, Brewing, Calendars, Clocks, etc...Each chapter explains (very interestingly) how ancient Pagans invented or developed, created or performed, imagined and lived many of the basic items, ideas, places and myths. Most people take things like banking, encyclopedias or theater for granted, but these are very ancient things that Pagans developed thousands of years ago. Of course, if you think about it, of course they did...after all, Christianity is only a few thousand years old, but Pagans have been around since humans first began to develop any kind of culture. The word pagan (which the author explains in the introduction) means villager, rustic or country dweller, and, after all, Pagans have been and are usually considered to be anyone who does not subscribe to the Judeo-Christian religions. Therefore, everyone who came before the development of Christianity was a Pagan! My only point is that I already knew that Pagans developed culture as we know it; but Ms. Nightmare has laid it out so nicely in this book. She obviously did a tremendous amount of research, and her hard work paid off. The book is fun, entertaining and educational.

If you are Pagan (like I am, I'm proud to say!), then this book will reinforce the importance of Pagans to our world. If you are not Pagan, then this book will show you how BUSY we Pgans have been for the last 20,000 years!
