I purchased this book after hearing the author speak at a conference. He gives such a positive view on ADD. The book itself is well written especially for individuals with ADD. It has a summary chapter with other chapters that expand on topics. It is a great resource for teachers & parents with children with ADD and also adults with ADD.
Delivered from Distraction
By Edward M. Hallowell, M.D. and John J. Ratey
Delivered from Distractions may well be the best general book on ADHD to come out in the last five years. This is a groundbreaking book in terms of the balanced view it presents. The authors clearly demonstrate how ADHD can be a debilitating and serious condition but also convincingly argue that there are many gifts associated with what they refer to as ADD trait. This well structured book addresses ADHD across the lifespan and provides insights that will inspire readers into actively learning how to better manage their ADHD and tap into their unique gifts and abilities. This book is definitely not your typical medical model fair, yet is still very mainstream and respectable.
Oh by the way both authors are also diagnosed with ADHD themselves, and I suspect this is why they have such a balanced and positive "beyond just a disorder view".
This is what I would call a first-tier book; one that everyone should have. So if you are only planning to buy one book on ADHD, this one would be an excellent choice. In fact, I liked it so much I have it in three separate formats; hardcover, abridged audio, unabridged audio. Yes it is that good!
