Reader's Review: The Accidental Witness

I Was a Teenage Jehovah's Witness is not a work of fiction; it's the true story of a boy, who liked a girl on the bus, and--oops! ended up in a brainwashing cult. A sort of slip, banana-peel style, into a pit of cosmic slime. Truth is always stranger than fiction. Nathan's descent into the network of fear and lies that are the bedrock of the JW's drafting policy, is a gripping tale of teenage angst like none you've read before.

As you make the painful journey with the author, from troubled teen to gun weilding maniac, you will laugh, cry, and become extremely nervous about groups like the Jehovah's Witnesses.

The book illustrates how cults can use the vulnerability, intelligence, and natural curiosity of a teenager as a springboard for their own selfish designs. The way the JW's insinuated themselves into the author's life and mind is very disturbing, and the fact that much duplicity was involved will evoke a strong sense of injustice from the reader.

I highly recommend this book, especially to anyone who has had experience in freeing themselves from the bondage of a religious cult (and who love a hell of an adventure story).

Reader's Review: I was a teenage Jehovah's Witness

Many books written about experiences in cult groups are ghost written or are only interesting from a certain religious mindset

This book stands out as a piece of Americana - Not only does it give us an inside view on the strange and petty and controlling world of cults, but it let's us in on even stranger territory - the mind of a teenager. Instead of giving trite religious answers, it gives us unvarnished truth from Nate's inner being - the good, the bad and the ugly. This book made me laugh, made me frown, made me angry and made me cry. The ending was deeply satisfying. Instead of being a "How I was saved by jesus" story, its a look at what makes young boys think, how they think, and about the goodness and evil and sometimes sheer insanity of man. The style is not ghost-written, but has a pithy humorous flaver and style all its own that is truly original. Nate's first experience with LSD should have been tragic, but instead was hysterically funny and had me rolling on the floor. This book was an unexpected delight and I will glad recommend it to anyone who wants a good read.
