A GERMAN LIFE by Bern Wollschlaeger is a moving story of a young man's journey to his true self. In the process, he must turn away from his country of birth and his family to pursue his conversion to Judaism and the finding of his soul.
The book is well written and fast paced. It provides very personal insight into the mind and make up of a distinguished German military family committed to the Fatherland at all costs including ignoring the Holocaust in its' midst.
It also provides a picture of Israel that is both moving and disturbing. You come away with a better appreciation of both sides of the Palestinian conflict as well as the power of religious orthodoxy.
Finally, in Bernd's journey to Judaism one gains a rich appreciation of what it is to be a Jew.
This is a very worthwhile book that speaks to everyone who struggles and fights to find their true self.
Thanks Berndt for a taking me on this journey with you. I really enjoyed your book and the way that you presented your story - I found it extremely educational and very easy to read.
Having read your story it makes my mother's story and who and what she and my grandparents were so much more understandable.
Your story kept me captivated and I never wanted to put the book down. It answered so many unanswered questions for me of my heritage. The way you explained the many jewish customs and words etc. was wonderful and has given me a much better understanding of the jewish faith and its customs. This is a MUST READ book.
My mother's book is about her life as a jewish girl fleeing Germany to London and their struggles to survive and "fit in".[[ASIN:1844018733 Part of the Ocean: Coming of Age in Pre and Post War England, One Immigrant's Story]]
