I have just finished using this book as the primary text for a Women's study. For eighteen plus women who met for six weeks and covered the first six chapters this was a wonderful text. Lots of discussion and excitement. Wonderful art! Miki Raver offers a new and refreshing look at the women from the OT we thought we knew.
I also used Marsha Mirkin's book 'Women Who Danced by the Sea' as an additional resource. For those who want to explore the role of women in the fulfillment of God's plan I would recommend these texts.
I was visiting the Metropolitan Musem of Art bookstore recently and there was this big, magnificent book of biblical art, prominiently displayed near the section on women artists, called LISTEN TO HER VOICE by Miki Raver. Not surprising really that this book should be so favored by the Met Museum, it is by far the most extensive and best illustrated collection of fine art paintings of women in the Bible on the market today. Yes it is a coffee table book, in terms of its size and number of pictures, but the writing also has depth to match the finest midrash, along with a wonderfully elegant, poetic sensibility in its vocabulary. Here's an example from the opening of Miki Raver's introduction to the biblical Book of Ruth:
"The book of Ruth is an exquisite tale about the bond between women. The narrative is unique in Scripture because it centers around a female family struggling for survival in a man's world. It is a story of women's culture and women's values. It is about absolute commitment, embracing connection and love as a spiritual path."
Wow!
