In Thy Kingdom Come Randall Balmer has blow a breath of very fresh air into the church today. The Religious Right, as Balmer refers to the cabel of supposed Christians who seek to dominate politics today, is taken apart and exposed for what it is. Balmer gives us the reasons why the Religious Right has latched onto issues such as abortion, gay rights, and the exposure of religious symbols in the public square. Balmer even includes what is effectivly a dictionary of Religious Right termonology.
If you are outside the Religious Right read this book to understand why they see things as they do. If you count yourself as part of the Religious Right read this book to see if you haven't been led astray like a pig with a ring in its nose.
An excellent read, and a must read for anyone interested in politics or religion in America today.
This is a well intentioned look at the inconsistencies in the arguments and politics of the Religious Right. Many points are well defended, such as the inherent conflict between abortion and the death penalty. Still, the book seems shallow and fairly pointless. What purpose does it serve to simply disect and expose the weaknesses in your opponents views without also offering a more coherent and in this instance scripturally-based set of values?
