Reader's Review: dead ender

Curran is famous for spearheading the dissent against the Catholic Church's teaching on contraception nearly forty years ago. What the advocates for changing that teaching were never able to accomplish was to formulate a coherent theological framework that permitted contraception while maintaining the rest of the Church's teachings on sexual morality, or at least the greater part of them. Predictably, therefore the dissenters followed a trajectory that led them to reject many other moral doctrines such as those on premarital sex, fornication, [...] sex, divorce and remarriage, and so on. Basically, Curran, and others such as Bernard Haring, led many moral theologians and much of the laity off into the moral wilderness, far removed from Catholic tradition It has now become clear that the magisterium of the Catholic Church will never accept their theological innovations --- not just now but ever. Curran followed a theological dead-end. His intellectual progeny are to found in the Episcopal Church of the USA, where they reign triumphant over a dying denomination, and serve as an object lesson to anyone who is tempted to follow that path. Curran knows that his time has past, and this book is an attempt to remind people that he still exists. He is determined not to "go gentle into that good night".

Reader's Review: READ THIS BOOK!!!

This is one of the most interesting books that I have read in some time. Regardless of your personal secular or religious political position, this is a very well-written book that is sure to be a page turner!

Charles Curran lays his entire experience out for the public to read. Unlike many biographies and memoirs, Curran's work is not dry and inapproachable. Rather, his writing is laden with humor, satire and human-interest stories from his life that touch the heart of the reader.

In addition to the biographical portion of the book, outlined in the first three-quarters of the work, Curran presents a survey of his moral theology corpus as well as a commentary on the state of theology in the modern era. It is very interesting.

If you want to hear one of the most famous stories surrounding Roman Catholic Theology, the Roman Curia and the Academy in the United States from the point of view of the prime subject - Read this book!
