At age 69, the author made the decision to move in with her mother, who was then 92 years old and becoming frail. This little book tells their story in a way that speaks to everyone who is a caregiver or, like Lawler at the end of the book, facing the need for care. Each short chapter opens with a significant milestone in the journey of Lawler and her mother and moves on to Lawler's reflection connecting to the appropriate station. A bulleted list of questions for caregivers and a verse of the Stabat Mater close the chapter. In connection with the twelfth station, Jesus Dies on the Cross, Lawler says, "We caregivers are Simon of Cyrene, Veronica, Mary Magdalene, and the other women, and the Beloved Disciple, faithful to the end and strengthened by Mary, Mother of Jesus and us all."
This story of caregiver and receiver is an honest look at what many of us face, in one form or another, in our own lives. Lawler's experience would go a long way in helping us do our best whatever the circumstance, particularly in relation to the aged. Mother's and My Way of the Cross is a wonderful gift for anyone who is caring for or has given care to an aged relative. Chapter titles include living with decisions, being afraid, making mistakes, and picking up the pieces.
