Not very captivating, somewhat fawning...

Sorry, but I guess this is one of the things that turns me off to martial arts and their adherents: a search for someone who has what you don't. Most martial arts require a sense of servility, and a sense of awe towards the master or leader. Jim's book certainly reinforces this tendency. I know Jim, and am frankly a little dissapointed to find that he is almost obsequious about the ones he calls the master. It has been a few months since I read the book, but I do recall certain aspects of the book that were quite dissapointing. I do remember that as I read thru the book things became quite predictable, and that the last half of the book was easily skimmed. In fact, it's the fastest I've ever read a book, and not because it was so captivating, but rather because I had a pretty good premonition about what was coming. Anyone who has ever studied Eastern Mysticism will be acquainted with most of the book's major ideas. These are all a rehash of Oriental philosophy. When I want to know how to better myself, and I always do, I will most assuredly not be looking around the a master. Some of the character traits Jim admires, I admire also. Anyone who is centered, who has a sense of self balance, will not be easily pulled by the confusing pace of the outer world. And if someone comes along and demonstrates a strong sense of character, who embodies heroic qualities, I will admire this person, and want to know what makes him click. But I won't fawn over him. If I do, I have automatically made myself a lesser person, not a better person.
