About Morihei Ueshiba

Aikido was developed in the 1920s by Morihei Ueshiba (often referred to by his title O Sensei which means Great Teacher).

Even as a young man, he was a prominent martial artist, a master of the sword, the staff, the spear, and the art of Ju-Jutsu. Yet O Sensei was very bothered by the idea of victory over others. “The only true victory is over oneself’’ he always claimed.

After years of technical cultivation, and a strong spiritual drive, the art of Aikido was born.

“The secret of Aikido’’ , he wrote,“ is to harmonize with the universe, bring peace to our hearts, and thus to our world.”
